Importance of Animal Transportation

The transportation of pets is the intentional moving of an animal from one location to another, usually with the intention of obtaining the animal for profit. Common modes of transportation include wildlife transporting, pet transporting, or livestock transportation. Livestock usually refers to cattle, horses, and hogs. Other common categories of wildlife that are commonly transported include zoo animals; laboratory animals; wild animals being reintroduced or rescued; and pets, such as cats and dogs. Many species can be successfully transported over long distances, although a great deal of care needs to be taken to ensure the safety of the transport medium and of the animal itself.

Some of the most common modes of animal transportation include air transportation, land transportation, and water transportation. Air transportation also referred to as air cargo transportation, involves the transport of dangerous or hazardous goods by airplanes. These include cargo such as weapons, dangerous chemicals, and nuclear weapons. Due to the extreme conditions during air transportation, special procedures must be used in transporting dangerous cargo, such as radioactive materials. Land transportation involves the transport of live animals in trucks or other vehicles. Livestock and zoo animals are commonly transported via trucks. Most wildlife is transported in crates or kennels. Some businesses also ship live animals via airline cargo services. Animals can also be shipped via road vehicles, boats, and bicycles.

Animal care and animal welfare organizations also provide pet shipping services. They usually have a number of vehicles that are equipped with the necessary equipment for ground shipping for dogs, and they provide these services at a reasonable rate. However, it should be noted that most pet shipping businesses only accept certain breeds of pets, such as cats and dogs. Furthermore, most pet shipping businesses only accept pet silhou from countries that are recognized by the United States and the United Kingdom as safe countries for traveling pets.

A recent controversy regarding the transportation of pets was sparked by a United Nations Conference on Trade. The United Kingdom and several other European Union member states along with Australia and Ireland filed a petition with the UN to exempt the transport of farm animals from the continent due to the presence of illegal organized crime groups that operate throughout the EU. According to the group, most of the animals transported to other EU countries were abused, mutilated, or subjected to starvation or dehydration while in transit. Many of the farm-raised animals that were brought to the EU from non-EU countries were subjected to bad practices including forced breeding, battery cage confinement, disease, lack of nutrition, or excessive pain. In addition to the aforementioned countries, the United States, Canada, New Zealand, and Norway have also signed the Counsels for Animal Transport Protocols, which exempts some types of farm livestock transportation. While this issue has become a global concern, there are still some loopholes within the law. For example, a UK citizen can bring their pet dogs or cats from Europe to the United States without the need for a visa. Similarly, if an EU researcher wishes to transport laboratory animals used in research, there are no restrictions or permits needed in the United States or Canada. The lack of importation requirements in the United States and Canada makes it possible for people to transport their pets from places such as Mexico to the United Kingdom, or from Spain to the United Kingdom, among many other locations. The few importation laws that do exist tend to be rather loosely enforced, so taking care to follow the proper procedures and conventions when bringing pets and research animals from one country to another can help ensure that both the animal and its cargo are protected.
